Gaza Humanitarian Collapse: UN Weighs Security Force Amid Worsening Crisis

GAZA, PALESTINE — The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is worsening as Israel’s ongoing siege and destruction leave millions facing severe shortages of food, clean water, and healthcare.

The world is now debating the creation of a UN-supervised international security force to stabilize the war-torn enclave.

Environmental and Health Collapse in Khan Younis

In Khan Younis, residents of the Al-Amari neighborhood report that rainwater has mixed with raw sewage, threatening to flood homes and streets. The destruction of sewage systems has created a looming environmental disaster.

The Network of Civil Society Organizations in Gaza confirmed that the enclave is still suffering from a “real famine,” with humanitarian aid meeting no more than 30% of basic needs.

Despite immense damage, UNRWA remains the backbone of Gaza’s humanitarian response.

UNRWA Shelters 75,000 Palestinians in Damaged Facilities

UNRWA reports that around 75,000 displaced Palestinians are sheltering in more than 100 of its heavily damaged facilities.

Conditions are “extremely harsh,” marked by overcrowding, lack of food and clean water, and disease outbreaks caused by broken sanitation systems.

The agency warned of an imminent humanitarian collapse unless the international community takes swift action to protect civilians and restore essential services.

81% of Gaza Destroyed: UN Calls It ‘Unprecedented in Modern History’

A UN Deputy Spokesperson revealed that 81% of Gaza’s structures have been completely destroyed, calling the devastation “unprecedented in modern history.” The UN has officially classified Israel’s campaign as genocide.

Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense, warned that unexploded ordnance across the Strip has become a ticking time bomb, threatening countless civilians. Gaza lacks the equipment and expertise to remove these explosive remnants safely.

The World’s Toughest Humanitarian Mission

A Guardian report described Gaza as enduring “the toughest humanitarian mission in modern warfare.” Over 61 million tons of rubble cover the Strip, with 10,000 to 14,000 people believed to remain trapped beneath.

Rescue teams are digging by hand with shovels and pickaxes, as Israel continues to block heavy machinery from entering. During 16 days of ceasefire, only 472 bodies were recovered.

About 77% of Gaza’s road network has been destroyed, and experts estimate that clearing the rubble could take more than seven years, given thousands of unexploded munitions that have already caused 147 incidents and 52 deaths since October 2023.

UN Deliberates on International Stabilization Force

UN Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that the UN Security Council is considering a U.S.-drafted resolution to deploy an international stabilization force in Gaza for at least two years.

He emphasized that any new governing entity in Gaza must derive its legitimacy from the United Nations and called for a credible political process to end Israel’s occupation and achieve Palestinian self-determination through a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard visited Israel to review the ceasefire implementation and discuss postwar arrangements with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top security officials.

Israel Accused of 200 Ceasefire Violations

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, Israeli forces have committed around 200 ceasefire violations since the truce began on October 10, revealing the fragility of the ceasefire and the continued suffering of Palestinians amid an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
